Background
Traditional PDH or SDH technology uses single-wavelength transmission. However there are many wavelengths that are not fully utilized.
It is a great waste of optical fiber capacity.
DWDM technology is developed by using more wavelengths in the existing fiber cable for high-capacity transmission.
Below diagrams present a clear explanation to this.
Single service transmission, Low capacity
Single service transmission, Low capacity
What is DWDM?
In an optical fiber, there are many different wavelengths that could be used in transmission fields such as Radio&TV or X-ray.
As we introduced, traditional PDH or SDH technology just uses single wavelength for limited capacity transmission.
In plain words
WDM(wavelength-division multiplexing) multiplexes or combines a number of optical carrier signals onto a single optical fiber.
Then distribute those signals to different unused wavelengths to realize large capacity transmission tasks on existing optical fiber.
In actual transmission, factors such as fiber loss and optical channel crosstalk must be considered.
The rapid development of peripheral electrical devices especially EDFA(optical amplifiers) has helps matured and commercialize DWDM technology.
