A poe switch supplies power and data connection via Ethernet cables such as Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6. It seems to be a trend to apply IP cameras In modern security&surveillance applications. Its advantage is highly accessible after the camera data streams are processed by a gigabit POE PSE switch.
With a single Cat5e network cable, the IP cameras can be installed wherever is no longer than 100 meters away with the POE switch, this expands the surveillance scope even in remote areas. A POE extender is required when it is over 100 meters.
When there are more than one IP cameras, let’s say 4 cameras, then a 5-port gigabit POE/POE+ Ethernet switch is a good choice, and it also meets the requirements for some power-hungry IP camera systems.
Besides, when connecting with a poe switch, a buyer usually needs to consider the temperature, that is what we call indoor or normal switch and industrial POE switch.
Let’ s take Olycom commercial 18-port gigabit 480W 16 poe/poe+ fiber switch for example, it supports connecting 16 IP cameras and then transmitted on fiber to the core switch in the server room.
This is a usual and typical application in city and Community monitoring system. However in some extreme and remote areas, it is better to choose an industrial POE switch.
This 12 port gigabit POE industrial Ethernet switch offers smart-managed functions to better control the power output in each port, it is POE IEEE802.3at 30W by default, an administrator can managed and control the switch remotely if there is any problem or a port goes down. In most cases, they can reboot any non-responding PoE IP camera without going to the camera’s location.
Generally, POE switches are widely used such as business rooms, homes and Communities, it plays a heavy presence in securing our life. Olycom provides normal and industrial managed PoE switches with 8-port, 24-port, and 48-port for different IP camera security systems, which offers multiple ideal solutions in various situations.
